I am currently scanning a number of family photos from the Pardee Home
Museum that are c. 1890's. The scanner we use is an inexpensive one and
I simply make sure it lines up straight and scan it. It doesn't heat up
like a more expensive model that I've used at a previous internship, but
in recognition of the potential damage that light and heat can cause
even with such a brief exposure, the rules are simple:
The surface the images are laid upon should be clean and free of
oil/fingerprints and dust
scan only once if possible
remove the image from the scanner immediately
