Slavery in Massachusetts: Lecture at Commonwealth Museum
William Francis Galvin, Secretary of the Commonwealth, announced recently
that Alexandra Chan of Boston University will present a lecture titled
"Slavery in Massachusetts: An Archaeological Perspective" at the
Commonwealth Museum, Saturday, April 7, 2001, at 10:30 am. The lecture will
focus on recent discoveries at Medford's Isaac Royall House.
The Royall house had quarters for twenty-seven slaves, believed to be the
only slave housing remaining in the northern United States. Royall was a
merchant who made a fortune on the island of Antigua in the sugar and slave
trades. His son Isaac Royall, Jr., fled Massachusetts on the eve of the
American Revolution.
Chan's talk is the latest in a monthly lecture series on Massachusetts
history. The Commonwealth Museum is located in the Massachusetts Archives
building on Columbia Point in the Dorchester section of Boston. Admission
and parking are free and the building is handicapped accessible. For
additional information or a brochure listing future lectures call
617-727-2816.
