There are portable CD-ROM readers/players on the market. I know from family
members. (Unfortunately, I do not know how much they cost.)

In addition, almost all new computers have a CD rom (so files can be read
and easily transfered between computers), while the zip-drive is not as
popular, so it may be difficult to share files (however, there are portable
zip-drive units, whereas CD-rom does not).
