Curatorial Assistant - VIREO. The Academy of Natural Sciences is seeking a
full-time Curatorial Assistant for VIREO. VIREO is part of the
Ornithology Department at The Academy of Natural Sciences and is the world's
most comprehensive collection of bird photographs. It houses over 96,000
35mm slides and 5,000 black-and-white prints of over 6,100 bird species.
VIREO was established in 1979 to create a centralized, well-curated
collection of bird photographs accessible for scientific and public use.
The Curatorial Assistant is responsible for day to day collection
activities of VIREO, including curation, order preparation, database input
and slide loans. College degree in biology preferred; in rare cases,
experience may be adequate substitute. Basic knowledge of avian taxonomy,
and behavior. Ability to interact politely and efficiently with clients.
Basic computer skills including experience with Microsoft Access and Word or
similar programs. Experience in photography and the business of photography
helpful. Experience with Photoshop, and HTML desirable. Good organization
skills and attention to details; ability to work independently. For more
