To address the original question, no, the salary you are paying this
employee does not seem fair considering your location and the employee's
level of education. I would say that as an entering salary, $22K could be
acceptable for a recent graduate; however, if the employee has some
experience in the field or has been working for your museum for more than
one year, the salary is much too low. I have just completed my MA in art
history and have begun my first full-time job in a small southern city.
My starting salary, to be raised after 3 months, is the same you are
paying your employee. I must say that I would not have accepted a job
paying this salary if I had not been extremely eager to work in this field
and if I hadn't been guaranteed a prompt raise in salary.
