The Museum of Northern Arizona offers the Year 2001 Museum Collections
Management Internship
Founded in 1928, the Museum of Northern Arizona is one of the few
institutions in the Southwest to combine a public education and exhibit
program with a research center. The institution is known worldwide for
its exploration of the natural and cultural history of the region. The
Museum offers summer intern positions for upper level undergraduate or
graduate students interested in gaining experience related to museum
collections care and management. These internships are cosponsored by
the BF Foundation of Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Internship Description:
Collections management interns work closely with Museum collections
staff
and are involved in hands-on projects in all aspects of collections
management. Activities may include the preparation, cataloging,
conservation, or documentation of anthropology, biology, fine art,
geology, photo archives or library collections. Interns will visit
other museums in the Northern Arizona region and take part in weekly
discussions of current topics related to collections management.
Students in Museum Studies programs are encouraged to apply.
Qualifications:
Applicants must be enrolled college or university upper level
undergraduate or graduate students with at least a 3.0 GPA, and an
interest in museum studies, anthropology, natural science and/or fine
art.
Dates:
The 10-week, full-time (35 hours per week) internships begin in late
May. Allowance will be made for qualified applicants attending
institutions on the quarter system.
Living Allowance:
A weekly allowance of $267 will be provided to cover living expenses.
Interns must provide their own transportation, and health insurance.
The Museum provides on-campus housing in cabins, a communal
kitchen/lounge, modern restroom/shower facilities, and an on-site
laundry. A $50 refundable security deposit and resident contract are
required for housing.
Application:
The following materials must be received at the Museum no later than
April 3, 2001:
* A resume that reflects your work history, current major, and academic
and/or other honors.
* A one-page, typed, statement addressing why you wish to be a
collections intern and what you hope to
gain from the experience.
* Two letters of recommendation, at least one of which is from academic
staff at your college or university.
* A copy of your college or university transcript (may be unofficial).
* Telephone number and time when you can be reached during the day.
