TITLE: Manager of Accounting
Regular full-time, 37.5 hours/week
COMPENSATION: Minimum of range $46,900 annual rate plus full benefits
package
Working under broad direction, responsible for managing the accounting
functions at the institution. Applies accounting principles, theories,
concepts and practices to the solution of problems for which there is not
always a clear precedent. Interprets implications of financial data and
prepares reports for management. Has extensive contact with all staff
levels internally, has frequent contact with outside vendors, agencies and
consultants, and with Overseers and Trustees. Supervises Business Office
staff which includes accountants and accounting assistants.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Assures the smooth operation of all accounting
functions. Reviews financial data and carries out financial analysis;
discusses with and prepares reports for managers as necessary. Ensures that
work done in the department is accurate and in accordance with generally
accepted accounting practices and makes sure that appropriate internal
controls are in place. In conjunction with Vice President for Financial
Affairs, designs and implements accounting policies and procedures.
Monitors institutional expenses in relation to budgets; analyzes and
explains variances. Files all required tax returns and other reports with
the appropriate government agencies. Assists in the development of
financial information for grant requests; maintains appropriate records of
grant activity. Prepares and files grant reports with the appropriate
organizations or agencies. Audits and prepares schedules and journal
entries for the month-end and year-end closes. Works closely with the
auditors, providing account analyses and reconciliations for the annual
audit. Develops and controls budget for Financial Affairs department.
Administers accounting software system and business office network.
OTHER FUNCTIONS: Serves on institutional committees as appropriate. Other
duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS: Must have thorough knowledge of accounting. These skills
are usually acquired through a bachelor's degree in accounting or equivalent
course work. CPA strongly preferred. Strong knowledge of and experience
with fund accounting in a large multi-disciplinary non-profit organization
highly preferred. Strong financial analysis skills required. Able to
maintain a high degree of accuracy and able to recognize and communicate
potential problems. Must have excellent written and oral communication
skills. Must be well organized, able to delegate effectively and to work
with a minimum of supervision. Must be diplomatic in dealing with staff,
readers, volunteers, visitors and outside organizations. Must be efficient
in prioritizing work on simultaneous projects. Minimum of 2 years
experience as an accounting manager or 2 years as an accountant in a major
public accounting firm required. Supervisorial experience in an accounting
office with at least 3 staff preferred.
