My organization (The Computer Museum History Center) is building a new,
35,000 sq. ft. collection storage facility and I'm curious about new,
innovative ways to both physically store our collection and about possible
database options. We have everything in our collection from textiles and
photos to chips, wafers, and mainframes. While we're developing a pallet
rack/shelf/drawer system, does anybody have any innovative suggestions for
organizing/locating the objects (other than labelling racks and shelves
with numbers and letters)? What about electronic tracking or rfid tags?
Also, we currently enter all collection information into a FileMaker
database. However, we're curious just how many history museums opt for this
system. I know about our options (ARGUS, et al.) but wondered to what
extent FM had been expanded and adapted. Thoughts?
In a museum going through a major metamorphosis, I appreciate any input you
might have.
