Heritage Programming for Youth Funded
The Alutiiq Museum and Archaeological Repository has received a $15,000
grant from the Kodiak Island Housing Authority to sponsor two public
outreach programs aimed at sharing Alutiiq heritage with Kodiak youth.
Funds will be used to support a traveling exhibit on traditional grass
basketry and a mask carving workshop.
Grass Baskets of Kodiak , and exhibit which debuted in the Museum
gallery last summer, has been redesigned for travel to Kodiak area
villages. This show features the basketry of Arlene Skinner as well as
several pieces from the museum’s collections. With help from the Kodiak
Housing Authority, the Kodiak Area Native Association, the Kodiak Island
Borough School District, and the Alaska Fund for the Future, basketry
displays will be shown at all the village schools. An educational
brochure on Alutiiq basketry and a weaving exercise for students will
accompany the exhibit. Some communities will also host weaving
workshops.
The mask carving workshop will be held in Kodiak and is scheduled for
next fall. Local carvers will teach students to create traditional
Alutiiq masks using information from pieces in the Alutiiq Museum’s
collections as inspiration. Both projects are part of the museum’s
effort to instill pride in Native ancestry by preserving and sharing
Alutiiq culture.
The Alutiiq Museum is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving
and sharing the cultural traditions of the Alutiiq, a Native Alaskan
people. It is governed by representatives of Kodiak’s Alutiiq
corporations, with funding from charitable contributions, memberships,
grants and sales. The museum is located at 215 Mission Road, Suite 101
in Kodiak, Alaska. Current hours of operation are Tuesday - Friday 9-5
& Sat., 10:30 - 4:30. Telephone: 907-486-7004, Fax: 907-486-7048,
