" However, the entire "art community" suffers a blow every time some
controversial artist doesn't take the opportunity to explain their
intentions. At least talking to the media continues dialogue in the
public forum which is better than the dictatorial dialogue Guliani has
proposed (i.e., a panel to review standards). So, I think everyone
should stop condemning close-minded politicians and start condemning
"close-mouthed" artists.
Sincerely,
Jay Heuman"
Off times the reason a person creates an image, visual or verbal is
because they can not find a voice to adequately explain their feelings,
let alone defend those feeling from the attacks of some one as
aggressive as Mayor Giuliani.
To make any answer to him will only open a new avenue of attack by him.
The history of modern art is full of artists failing to judge the
publics reaction to their treatment of a given icon, flags, bombers,
religious symbols.
The anger that rises comes from both sides failing to understand. The
public, i.e. the mayor can not accept the criticism of his icons, and
the artist was not prepared for the defense of those icons.
Nothing new here. If your going to ask for a dialog, then ask for a
fair one. Not just an answer to a belligerent press. The people need to
be educated to understand that an icon and an institution can be
criticized. Till then your going no where. Your dialog is just so much
shouting in the wind.
