The Cultural Resource Management Program at the University of Victoria is
taking an intensive focus on the leadership skills needed to build strong
museum teams and organizations. Dr. Sherene Suchy draws on her expertise in
museum management, executive development and cross-cultural adaptation in
the cultural and business sectors, to facilitate this timely and interactive
workshop for museum and heritage professionals who wish to develop their
management skills.

"Managing Cultural Organizations: Skills for Effective Leadership"
November 27 to December 2, 2000
Contemporary museum and heritage directors must have strong interpersonal
and self-management skills, as well as a range of business and human
resource management competencies, to provide effective leadership in times
of change. This intensive workshop enables you to assess your management
style and build your capacity to lead with passion and vision, by
strengthening your understanding of:
* leadership and management requirements in the museum and heritage sector
* behavioural change processes
* interpersonal competency development
* the connection between self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and
managerial success
skill requirements in different organizational contexts
* managing diversity
* team development and facilitation
* conflict resolution and negotiation characteristics of non-profit cultural
organizations
You should bring experience in working with people in team or supervisory
relationships and a willingness to evaluate your personal approaches to
management and leadership.
Instructor: Dr. Sherene Suchy is a consultant specializing in executive
development and cross-cultural adaptation in the cultural and business
sectors. Her doctoral research involved an international study on the
director's role in museum leadership(Australia, Canada, USA, England)and she
serves as Adjunct Lecturer in the Graduate School of Management at the
University of Technology in Sydney, Australia.
Dates: November 27 to December 2 plus preparatory assignment
