The Schiele Museum of Natural History and Planetarium, with anthropology and
natural science collections, seeks to fill two full-time positions: an
Assistant Director for Administration and an experienced Collections

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR MUSEUM/ADMINISTRATION
Performs complex administrative work as an Assistant to Museum Director and
President of the Museum's Board. Responsible for the Museum in the absence
of the Director. Direct supervision is exercised over the Financial,
Personnel, Marketing, Facility Operations and Visitor Services Areas.
Compiles monthly, annual and special reports for City of Gastonia and Museum
Board of Directors. Assists in departmental organization, preparation of
budget and control of divisional expenditures; consults with officials of
other institutions, divisions and departments on matters of mutual interest;
assists with employment of departmental staff, as requested.
Thorough knowledge of benchmark Museum policies and programs. Comprehensive
knowledge of not-for-profit accounting, fund-raising and marketing.
Knowledge of legal procedures related to employment and management of Museum
staff. Ability to plan and direct work of others and effectively
communicate ideas orally and in writing; ability to plan, implement and
evaluate complex financial and programmatic strategies; ability to establish
and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, employees,
public officials, and the general public.
Requires Graduation from an accredited college or university with major work
in finance, business law, management and/or communications and considerable
non-profit or governmental experience in progressive supervisory roles.
Graduate work in Public Administration or Management desirable.

MUSEUM COLLECTIONS MANAGER/REGISTRAR
The Collections Manager/Registrar supervises a collections
technician/assistant registrar and a part-time research library technician,
and works with the Curatorial Research Coordinator to develop and implement
collections policies and procedures and computerized record keeping. The
Collections Manager/Registrar also works with the Head of Exhibit
Development and Design to coordinate a varied traveling exhibits program
RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Plan and develop related policies and procedures for the museum's varied
collections.
* Train and oversee storage, condition assessment and cataloguing of
collections and relevant field and laboratory research records, by
registration assistants, Adjunct personnel, volunteers and student interns.
* Document movement condition and inventory of collections and monitor the
environment of all exhibition and collection storage areas and coordinate
conservation treatment projects, and plan future access and preservation
initiatives.
* Create and maintain loan and gift forms, loan agreements, contracts,
insurance documents.
* Create facility and condition reports for traveling and in-house temporary
exhibitions; supervise shipping, customs and courier arrangements; prepare
incoming and outgoing condition reports; indirectly supervise preparators
and installation crews in packing, unpacking and object handling during
installation and takedown of exhibits and storage of crating.
* Assist with collections management and all relevant legal standards for
major accreditation reviews and renovation projects.
* Respond to inquiries about the collections maintain effective systems for
intellectual access to and use of collections and for the use and licensing
of rights and reproductions.
* In collaboration with other Curatorial Division staff, develop and write
grant proposals and create and manage the annual collections management,
registration and conservation and library budgets.
COLLECTIONS MANAGER/REGISTRAR QUALIFICATIONS
B.A. or B.S. in relevant natural, physical or social science or in
information science with museum collections experience required. M.A. in
museum studies with a collections management focus and/or two to three years
supervisory responsibility as Assistant Registrar or Assistant Collections
Manager level desirable
Candidate should possess excellent written and verbal communications and
supervisory skills (grant writing a plus); effective budget and scheduling
management experience and thorough knowledge of collections management,
registration and conservation standards essential. Candidate must be
proficient in a Windows NT environment, using Word, Excel, Access and/or
Superbase with practical experience in general database development and
prior experience with digitizing images. Must be able to use stairs and lift
and move objects weighing up to 30 pounds, unassisted.
