Working in a museum with a small staff and an international scope I have
been introduced to some of the pleasures and pains of working at an NPO. I
am finding that salary issues need to be addressed through innovation.
While my title is Director of Education, I can also tack onto it: curator,
registrar, IT Person, janitor, and probably a few more.
Although I could do without a few of those titles, I honestly enjoy the
multi-disciplinary aspect of my work. My sense of accomplishment is
greater tackling projects where I am working beyond my position's proposed
duties. That I will be able to apply for a variety of positions in the
future is a bonus. I love options.
What really stinks is that I am far from making the salary I think that I
deserve. I have to say that the worst thing about my job is the question I
pose to myself when I am juggling three phone calls and four projects, "How
will I ever make any money when I don't think that I can I possibly work
any harder?" Once the realization attacks my senses that I can't work any
harder I begin to feel resentment towards my employer. --wrong answer.
Not long ago I realized that my attempts to avoid a career in sales are for
not. This fantastically dynamic and evolutionary society I live in is all
about sales. Honestly, I think that the capitalism keeps ideas fresh and
growing.
That is when it hit me. I need to create some increase in monetary profits
within the museum to justify my salary and an increase in it. Whether it
is implementing a program, expanding one, finding a sponsor or a large
grant, I think that museum professionals have to face it, we are in the
world of business. If the museum grows, chances are, our salary will too.
Now if I can only find the time to figure out how,--any suggestions?
