The Power of Music
The Greek word mousa, meaning muse, the spirit-source of genius or
inspiration, is the etymological root of both museum and music. In the next
issue of Hand to Hand (a quarterly publication of the Association of
Children's Museums), we intend to explore the role of music programs and
exhibits in children's museums.
• How does music effect brain development?
• What is the role of music education in early learning? In museum learning?
• What are the cross-over learning possibilities of a music exhibit/program?
• What are the ways in which music programs or exhibits promote cultural
heritages and attract diverse audiences?
• In an exceedingly visual culture, how can sound and music exhibits reach
portions of museum audiences with visual impairments or other disabilities?
• How can museums identify and collaborate with music programs and
organizations in their communities?
• How can museums use new technologies to build strengthen and build their
music programs?
For a survey article on the innovative and compelling music programs and
exhibits in museums (all museums—not just children's museums), we are looking
for examples from the field.
This issue will be guest edited by Roy Mueller, Director of Education at
Kidspace Children's Museum in Pasadena. In addition to Roy's experience at
Kidspace and the Children's Discovery Museum of San Jose, Roy is a
classically trained musician, composer and music educator. He has played the
oboe professionally in orchestras all over the world and also holds a
certificate of jazz performance from Berklee School of Music.
