In response to Matthew's questions, I am using the term "Friends" to mean a non-profit private group with membership which supports the museum.  We are a City Department and cannot have "members" per se, so to be a member of our museum one joins the Friends.  We have many volunteers who aren't members of the Friends.   I know that one could dissect the term and types of related organizations, but my question was, I thought, a more generic one.  I, too, have had Friends groups in the past which got out of hand in terms of the control they wanted to have.  I am currently blessed with a dynamic, hardworking group which offers suggestions but doesn't presume to control.

Thank, by the way, to all who responded to the question this time - many off line, too.  10% seems to be most standard in the response I'm getting.   Thanks again.
