While a number of individuals have offered shelving suggestions, let's
go back to back to the original question and the use of particle board
and Medite (actually, I believe, Medite II). This is a board which uses
a phenol-formaldehyde glue, rather than the far more problematic
urea-formaldehyde adhesive. Nevertheless, this is only the glue -- and
it leaves unaddressed the issue of off-gassing of acetic acid and other
carbonyl compounds from the wood itself.
Consequently, if this shelving is used, it must still be coated and this
typically means a 2-system epoxy with an off-gassing period of about 4
weeks prior to use.
The point is that we shouldn't get sucked into the idea that using
Medite II is a real solution. It often isn't, since the glue is only one
of several issues we should be considering.
Best,
Mike Trinkley
