A one-day workshop for presidents, CEO's, and executive directors at
museums, historical societies, and cultural organizations focusing on
leading and managing organizational change.
What role does vision play in leading change?
How can changing environments be anticipated and responded to more
effectively?
How can organizations be encouraged to be less change-averse and more
comfortable with risks?
Seminar Overview
Meeting the Challenge of Change is a workshop specifically designed for the
staff and board leadership of cultural nonprofits. Change happens.
Confronting it, "learning to live the leap," as keynote speaker, David
Baum, puts it, is what this seminar is all about. Building on the model
used so successfully by Fortune 500 companies, this day-long workshop will
provide participants with an engaging introduction to becoming a
quick-changing organization. Dr. Baum's presentation will be augmented by
case studies from five northeastern and mid-Atlantic museums.

David Baum, Ph.D. is author of Lightning in a Bottle: Proven Lessons for
Leading Change and president of D.H. Baum & Associates, a consulting firm
specializing in complex systems change. Dr. Baum's clients include Fortune
500 companies and nonprofit organizations. He also devotes one month per
year to pro bono projects such as conflict resolution in Belfast and tribal
revitalization in Native American communities. He served as the lead
consultant for President Clinton's Summit for America's Future. His
eclectic background includes stints as a clown, fire-eater, and storyteller
for various circus companies.
Jane E. Preston is a consultant to nonprofit, cultural and community
organizations and a Research Fellow at the Hauser Center for Nonprofit
Organizations at Harvard University. She is involved in research projects
exploring relationships between nonprofit organizations and their funding
sources; future directions in philanthropy; and leadership challenges in
museums. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in economics from Wellesley College
and a Master in Public Administration degree from the Kennedy School of
Government at Harvard University.

The workshop, continental breakfast and lunch will be held at Strong
Museum, One Manhattan Square, Rochester, NY; 716-263-2700.
A block of rooms has been reserved at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel, 120
Main Street East. A conference rate of $79.00 per night for
singles/doubles/triples/quads is available to workshop participants who
make room reservations by 5:00 p.m. on October 22, 2001. To reserve a

the special rate, participants must identify themselves as members of MANY.
The hotel offers complimentary shuttle service to the airport, train
station and bus station.
Rochester is easily accessible by car, bus, air, and train. A variety of
hotels are available downtown near Strong Museum, as well as at the Greater

Registration and Fees
Registration for MANY members is $65 (received with complete payment by
October 31, 2001). Non-member registration is $85 (received with complete
payment by October 31, 2001). Participants in the Upstate History Alliance
2001 Leadership Institute and additional registrants from the same
institution can deduct $10 from the stated fees. All registrations after
October 31, 2001 are $100 (no discounts or deductions). All registrations
will be confirmed. Refund requests must be received in writing by October
20 to the MANY office. No refunds are given after that date.
