While not directly a "museum person" I am involved on a daily basis with
museums and other exhibits. I think that it is probably easy for people who
work at museums to become involved in the day to day concerns of the museum
and the problems involved in working with the general public and lose sight
of the impact that museums have on people. I'm sure these comments are a
bit of preaching to the choir but these memories are still enlightening.
I have two exhibits that I remember most. First, as a kid my mother would
take me the Museum of Science & Industry (Los Angeles) and I would go to the
Mathamatica (s.p.?) exhibit by Ray and Charles Eames. I think there were
several installations of this exhibit in other museums around the country.
A good example of corporate sponsorship (IBM). I would return to this
exhibit time and again seeing the same things and discovering new things
each time.
The second, as an adult living in NYC, was an exhibit at the Museum of
Natural History (NY). I don't actually remember if the exhibit was on Gems
or Crystals. The only specific thing I remember is the voice of Hal
Holbrook. I used to go in the museum to the exhibit gallery to sit, watch,
contemplate, listen, and wander around. A very warm memory for me.
While we try to pique peoples interest in and understanding of various
specific subjects in exhibits I think it is also important to remember that
museums are environments that enrich people's memories and perhaps change
people's lives.
Thanks to everyone in the Choir.
