I remember my favorite toy in our kindergarten class in 1952 was the wooden
snap trains. They're still around, but the snaps have been replaced by
magnets, some of the trains are in bright colors instead of that lovely
plain maple finish, and (shudder) some of the trains now sport faces and
characters. Another retro toy I remember that is popular again (still?) is
that thing made of curved sections of wire with colored beads on it that
you can morph into different shapes. Then in the late fifties/early sixties
I coveted my brother's Tonka trucks. They were made all of metal then
except for the big rubber tires. Don't I sound like the old fogey, though?
Then there was the quintessential bucket and shovel for playing in the
sandbox or at the beach.
