Discover the History of The Lock Keeper's House
At Decatur House's Washington History Day
Washington, DC (March 14) - Learn the fascinating history of the
Lock Keeper's House at Washington History Day hosted by Decatur House Museum
on Saturday, March 31. Built circa 1832, the Lock Keeper's House is the
only surviving structure from the C&O Canal Extension, which once ran where
Constitution Avenue is today. Decatur House's Education Director Sheri J.
Levinsky will discuss the Lock Keeper's House and its relationship to the
early years of our nation's capital at a 1 p.m. lecture in the Decatur
Carriage House at 1610 H Street, NW. Following the lecture, stroll down
17th Street to Constitution Avenue and discover this historic structure
first-hand. Led by Levinsky, the walking tour will depart from 1610 H
Street and return to Decatur House for a guided tour of the museum.
Washington History Day activities are free and include the 1 p.m. lecture,
walk to the Lockkeeper's House and a tour of Decatur House. Reservations are
required and can be made by calling (202) 842-0918. A $5 per person donation
is suggested to help Decatur House's Education Department continue to offer
free programming.
