A date and a initials is little to go on, but here are a few leads you could
follow that might healp you find out more about the painter:

If you think it is a local artist, you can call your local archives and ask
about art funds (a collection of painting or pictures of paintings) from
that period. If not in an art fund, ask about any funds in that period.

There could be news paper articles about the artist. Consult an appropriate
index, see if you can find art review articles.

Otherwize, if you think the artist is of international recognition, there
are tons of web sites that feature paintings and artist bios by key word
search. Consult the Metalab (I don't no the the exact address, but those key
words should do it).

Let me know if that helps.

Mélanie

Objet : Research resources

I would appreciate if someone can direct me to a good resource to find out
more about artists from the 1930s.

I have a framed drawing (or print) that has a penciled signature, but it's
very difficult to read - the first name seems to begin with C or G, and last
name begins with M, N or even W. My first impression is something like Cione
Misonary. It is dated 1930. It seems to be pencil or fine charcoal
drawing/print. I'm not ready to open the backing as it's in an interesting
1930s stylish, but simple frame, but will do if I don't get an idea who the
artist is. It may just be a local/amateur artist.

Where would be a good resource to find out more about 1930s artists? Any
good databases on the Internet for list of artists?
