POSITION DESCRIPTION
TITLE: Registrar
REPORTS TO: Associate Curator
SALARY: $38,100 to $57,100, commensurate with experience

OFFICE OF SENATE CURATOR:
The Office of Senate Curator implements the policies and programs of
the United States Senate Commission on Art [USC §188b], which was
established in 1968 to accept, supervise, hold, place, and protect all works
of art, historical objects, and exhibits in the Senate wing of the United
States Capitol and in the Senate Office Buildings.
The office exercises supervisory responsibility for the Old Senate
and Old Supreme Court Chambers in the U.S. Capitol, compiles detailed
records of all works of art in the Senate's collection, and is responsible
for all loans to the Senate Leadership. The office also protects and cares
for these objects and, when appropriate, directs conservation and
restoration treatment by professional conservators. The curator and staff
suggest acquisitions, provide appropriate exhibitions, engage in research of
the historic collections of the Senate, and develop publications for the
general public
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES OF REGISTRAR:
administers registration program;
creates and maintains accurate manual and computerized records of
acquisitions, accessions, locations, permanent collection objects, loans,
donors, and all other registration activities;
coordinates computer projects and the digitization of collection
items;
oversees the care, safety, and security of collections;
responsible for loans to and from the Senate;
directs care, preparation, and documentation of objects on temporary
exhibition;
supervises Associate Registrar;
manages interns assigned to registration department;
participates in decisions regarding collections management issues;
and
supports Associate Curator with research and documentation of
collections.
QUALIFICATIONS:
BA degree in American history, American studies, political science,
or art history;
graduate degree in the field(s) of art history, museum studies, or
American history;
minimum five years institutional experience in the museum field;
knowledge of the concepts, principles, and practices of professional
museum registration methods and collections management standards gained
through advanced study of and experience in museum administrative work and
registration techniques;
extensive training in the handling and examination of art objects;
and
general knowledge of information retrieval systems and specific
experience with managing computer databases used in the museum field.
knowledge/experience with FileMaker Pro is a plus
