Yes, I can vouch for the difficulty of an American getting a job in the U.K.,
based on second-hand experience.  A friend of mine had to wait a number of
months for a work permit before he was able to assume a position at an
English museum.  He was there about a year, I think, then was released
(contract not renewed, fired, resignation requested, whatever) and eventually
returned to the States.  Although he has had some short-term positions and
free-lance curatorial jobs, he is still seeking permanent employment (and
this is a person who has had three senior curatorial positions over the
years).  The museum job market is tight everywhere.
