Our requirements for an undergraduate internship are:
1. the internship is supervised by a professional person at the site and
by a full-time faculty member in the department.
2. the student spends 10-12 hours a week on the internship (this can
include research or work time away from the internship site).
3. the work is primarily professional rather than clerical, with the
understanding that some routine work is part of everyone's job.
4. the student has some kind of project which he or she works on through
the semester in addition to assisting with day-to-day activities.
5. the student keeps a journal which is not only a record of activities
of the internship, but also reflections on them, on the institution, on
the larger context for the work, on readings done etc. This provides a
record and is evidence of and a place for academic learning.
Evaluation of the internship is done jointly by the supervisor at the site
and the faculty advisor, based on conversations with the student, the journal
(usually read only by the faculty member), and any evidence of the student's
project, whether in the form of catalogue entries, data collected, a small
exhibition etc.
