In New York State, according to responses by museums in our annual reports (1999 are the most recent) and in reply to a survey sent in 1998 by our Director:
Of 412 museums in our database,
165 have a web site (40 percent);
167 have an e-mail address (40.5 percent);
128 have both (31 percent).
Among historical societies, friends groups and other related institutions, the percentages are lower:
Of 1,088 such institutions in the database,
255 have a web site (23.5 percent);
300 have e-mail (27.5 percent);
179 have both (16.4 percent).
A quick reading of the URLs shows that the web sites are almost always maintained by the institution or by a host on behalf of the institution. More of the e-mail addresses are those of individuals.

An Oregon survey indicates that only 33% of 102 museums contacted (out of a total of about 250 museums in the state) have their own Internet access. Some other museums have indirect Internet access through personal accounts of staff, volunteers, and/or members.
Is anyone aware of studies that would provide this kind of information nationally, by region, or in states other than Oregon?
