Claudia,
We have large scale models suspended by monofilament in our totally glass
atrium/tower lobby area. Some which were hung when the building opened,
didn't have it changed until they had to be moved temporarily nearly ten
years later. I wouldn't recommend waiting that long, but certainly a year
or two shouldn't be too long. As an aside, to insure that the knots in the
line wouldn't loosen or pull through, I've taken to dabbing them with a bit
of clear nail polish and I'm then able to trim the loose end close to the
knot without worry.

Subject: monofilament
Hello Museum-L,
I am looking for information regarding the decay or life-span of
monofilament line, a.k.a. fishing line. Per the artist's instructions, we
have just used a high grade monofilament to hang a delicate, relatively
lightweight work of contemporary sculpture. I am aware that monofilament
degrades in UV light and would like to set up a reasonable schedule for
periodically replacing it. Were it to break, the sculpture would very
likely be destroyed. Would once a year be too often? Not often enough?
Any recommendations or guidance would be welcome.
Many thanks,
Claudia Kishler
