Scanning old photographs should cause so little damage that the value of
digitizing them is well worth the slight risk. Scanners are "cool" in terms
of heat and light. That's my humble opinion. We have over the last two
years scanned nearly 10,000 old photographs - dating back to the 1890s - and
have thus reduced to almost zero the number of times the originals must be
handled in any way.

Good scans will enable their use for books & other materials. Turning
originals over to a printing company, as was done a decade ago here, led to
inappropriate handling and the use of a "hot" camera to capture the images.

Others will disagree. But one value in old photographs is making them
accessible to the public - and scanning will prepare the way for booklets,
postcards, websites, etc.
