Diane,
While I really don't know if any formal evaluations have been completed, the Mohonk House (New Palz, NY) recently completed a large outdoor maze as part of its vast garden complex. Now it's just a matter of letting it grow! I would suggest contacting their Head Gardener and discuss why and how they decided to take on that project....it must have had some visitor-driven component.
