Assistant to the Director of Pre-Columbian Studies
FIRM CLOSING DATE: 1 SEPTEMBER 2000

General Functions:
Provides general office support to Director of Pre-Columbian Studies,
performing diverse duties for the Pre-Columbian Studies programs.

Typical Duties:

1.  Respoinds to inquiries about Pre-Columbian Studies by mail, email, and
phone; handles routine correspondence; receives visitors.

2.  Assists with all arrangements for annual Pre-Columbian Symposium,
seminars, and other academic events; handles mailings, travel and
accommodations arrangements, catering, and other administrative details.

3.  Handles all routine office functions for Pre-Columbian Studies Program,
including word processing, copying, establishing and maintaining file
system, mailings, supply ordering, equipment maintenance,  and scheduling of
events.

4.  In consultation with Director of Studies prepares and monitors
Pre-Columbian Studies budget.

5.  Assists with arrangements for meetings fof Senior Fellows in
Pre-Columbian Studies two times a year, including travel and accommodations;
takes minutes at meetings.

6.  Assists with editorial preparation or revision of manuscripts.

7.  Provides assistance to Pre-Columbian Fellows as needed.

8.  Performs related duties as required.

Qualifications:  B.A., preferably in the humanites.  Excellent communication
and interpersonal skills essential.  Knowledge of Spanish very desirable.
Strong office skills required, including accurate typing, computer
experience, budget preparation, ability to handle multiple demands and meet
deadlines.  Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, and basic internet
skills desirable.  Ability to work independently and as a member of a team
required.

Grade 52:  Starting salary mid-20's, depending on experience.  Excellent
