I am pleased to be able to respond to your query concerning the
museum categories in Korea.

The Promotion Law of Museums & Art Museums (latest revised
in 2000) gives classification of museums in its first chapter.
The classification is made based upon the museums'
"governing/managing bodies". They are as follows:

1) National Museums
2) Provincial Public Museums
3) Private Museums
4) University Museums

* By definition in the Promotion Law, an "art museum" is
particularly and additionally stated within the definition of a
"museum". Thus, above four categories may extend to "art
museums" as well.

It could be more accurate information to explain:
The Promotion Law's categorisation does NOT in fact imply that
the Korean Government has ever established a kind of an
"officially active system", to which the Law might provide
administrative principles. Therefore, it may be better
understanding that the categorisation has been inductively
defined in practice.
