As a previous poster mentioned, the Jackalope comes from out west and models
of it can be found readily - like at Wall Drug!.
Another "mythological" creature that comes to mind resides just across the
lake from you. In the Northwoods of Rhinelander, Wisconsin lives the Hodag
(sp?), mythical dragon-like creature that I believe has its origins in a
practical joke. Go figure. But now there are trinkets, and postcards, and
I think even a festival. I don't have a contact for you, but it may still
be worth pursuing.
