New information on the 9,ooo year old Chinese flutes and other Chinese
musical matters:
The URL at the bottom contains three short excerpts from presentations
at the recent International Study Group on Music Archaeology.
The information excerpts indicate the ancient Chinese flutes show:
1. The Chinese had the 7-note diatonic scale more or less in tune, and,
2. There was a progression over 1200 years from a pentatonic to a
diatonic mode including some other 7 and 8 note scales.
3. In addition, much later around the 16th century, the Chinese had
solved the problem of temperament, and had the twelve-tone series of
tempered tones.
