I will be leaving the Portland Museum of Art in late
July/early August and am hoping to help (or at least
start to help) the PMA find a new Registrar before I
leave. Below is a description of the position. I
would be happy to answer any questions about the job,

The Registrar reports to the Director and supervises
the Assistant Registrar, Registration Assistant and
Photographic Services Assistant.
Responsibilities include:
1. Coordinate all registrarial details of exhibition
planning and implementation including loan agreements,
contract review, condition reporting and monitoring,
coordinating conservation, packing, shipping, and
insurance for the Museum’s temporary exhibitions;
2. Coordinate any exhibitions traveled by the Museum,
including contract and facilities report review,
travel with exhibitions as necessary.
3. Coordinate outgoing loans from the Museum.
4. Develop and monitor budgets for Registration
Department.
5. Negotiate fine arts insurance and process of
claims.
6. Manage ten computer WIndows NT network for
Curatorial and Registration Departments.
6. Supervise the Assistant Registrar, who is
responsible for the coordination, documentation,
accessioning and condition reporting of all objects
entering the Museum’s collection and on long-term
loan, including the accurate and efficient maintenance
of all manual records and the collections database
(Collection by Vernon Systems).
8. Supervision of the Photographic Services Assistant,
who is responsible for the management of the Photo
Services operations of the Museum
Qualifications:
1. B.A. in Art History or related field required; M.A.
in Museum Studies preferred
2. Knowledge of Museum Registration Methods and three
years Museum Registration experience required
3. Very strong computer skills, with knowledge of
collections management software, especially Collection
by Vernon Systems, and Windows NT networks a plus
4. Strong management skills; ability to set priorities
5. Detail-oriented self-starter with good follow-up
skills; Strong organizational skills
6. Excellent verbal and written communications skills
7. Physical ability for handling, lifting, installing
works of art; prior art handling experience preferred
8. Must have the ability to pass a criminal background
check.
