The Washington Post had a recent editorial on this subject, offering what I
thought was an exellent solution to the problem. They suggested depicting
Lee by commemorating the post-war incident in which an African-American man
went up to receive communion in church. The white congregation held back in
consternation, but Lee got up and knelt beside the black man.
Such a painting would probably provoke another uproar, I suppose, over
separation of church and state! But I think it's a terrific idea.
