Mike Tesky's museum "goals" are good, yet I seem to be missing a statement along the lines of a clear purpose of the museum and realization by the museum of its purpose and role in the community. I've seen too many museums that really don't know their mission. A local historical museum originally stated that it covered the city, then the region, then the county, then two counties....and I don't know what next, but I begin to suspect that as they were offered items that did not fit the original mission, they simply changed it, rather than turn something down. I also heard the "collection development" officer of another museum describe his operation as to "develop a Smithsonian of the South." In short, when museums are tourist models, there should be some clarity of purpose. --Dean DeBolt, University of West Florida
