Re your Kathy Jones-Garmil's request for occult and the like museums...
There is a wax museum on Cannery Row in Monterey which provides an
historical background of Steinbeck's favorite little town, although I
wouldn't say it's ghoulish.  I would, however, recommend the Ripley's
Believe It or Not! Museum of wax figures and other bizarre attractions in
the Niagara Falls area (Canada side).
I'd also agree with Alan Kabat's reference to the (many) witchcraft
museums and other historical sites in Salem, MA.  They always give me the
heebie-jeebies, primarily because those horrors actually occurred!
