The Putnam County Museum’s mission is to collect, preserve, and interpret the natural, historical, and cultural heritage of the county. The Museum (www.putnamcountymuseum.org) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, supported by membership dues, donations, and restricted endowment funds. Organized in 2003, the Museum owns its facility at 1105 North Jackson Street in Greencastle, Indiana.  

Position Title: Museum Educator
Application Deadline: 5:00 P.M., July 8, 2024
Wage Range:  $42,000 - $48,000 
Receives supervision from the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors
40 hours, will include some evenings and weekends.

Key areas of responsibility: 
1.   LEADERSHIP  
    A.	Develops strong working relationships with Board of Directors, membership, community leaders, and staff members. 
    B.	Administers the overall operation and organization of the Museum’s collection in accordance with the highest professional and ethical standards including conservation, preservation, and 
                collection management. 
    C.	Serves as the primary spokesperson and advocate of the Museum.
    D.	Represents the Museum as a thought leader and advocate for the arts, culture, and history of Putnam County.
    E. 	Actively solicits and develops community relationships and partnerships. 
    F. 	Finds creative ways to involve community and Museum members, donors, and artifact/collection lenders, in the life and spirit of the museum. 
    G.	Develops a close and productive relationship with Board/Project Committees. 

2. STEWARDSHIP  
             Supervises and facilitates management of Museum’s collection including policies, procedures, forms; handling, care, and storage of artifacts; accessions, de-accessions; long- and short-term loans.   
 
3.	MANAGEMENT 
    A.       In conjunction with the Board Treasurer and the Finance Committee, facilitates budget development, contracted accounting services, internal fiscal management, and ensures required filings are 
               prepared and submitted.
    B.       Supports fundraising activities including gift shop, capital and endowment campaigns, and other fundraising activities. 
    C.       Identifies and facilitates grant writing including seeking out opportunities, developing applications, and all facets of grant administration for successful applications.  
    D.      Oversees care of facility and equipment, and inventory of supplies.
    E.	      Interfaces with suppliers: CPA, insurance agent, contractors, etc. 
    F.	     Collects and interprets management data for reporting to the Board.  
    G      Serves as a role model for all, leading, mentoring and managing Museum staff in areas under supervision, and fostering a positive, inclusive work environment.  

4.	INTERPRETATION 
   A.	    In collaboration with the Exhibits and Program Committee facilitates the production of exhibits including planning, research, acquisition of assets, presentation, signage, and publicity, and ensures 
            appropriate documentation of exhibited items. 
   B.	    Facilitates programming including exhibit related programs as well as other programming.  
 
5.	COMMUNICATIONS
    A.     In collaboration with the Communications Committee and Membership Committee, facilitates communication with existing and potential members, stakeholders, and visitors via: 
             1.	 Website 
            2. Traditional media: print, radio, and television 
            3.	Social media: Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube 
           4. Signage 
           5. Direct mail and email 
           6. The Arch 
    B.    Facilitates events, programs, educational activities 
    C.    Supervises Museum calendar 
 
6.	ADDITIONAL DUTIES  
The above description of essential functions is designed to indicate the primary areas of responsibility for the work performed by the Executive Director. It is not meant to be all inclusive of every task or responsibility. Nothing in the job description restricts the Executive Committee’s right to assign or reassign functions, or duties and responsibilities.
 

QUALIFICATIONS  
    A.	Record of professional accomplishments; demonstrated success in fund-raising, audience development, and institutional planning; commitment to excellence in all aspects of museum 
                management including scholarship, education, collections care, public outreach, and institutional development. 
    B.	Excellent managerial, planning, organizational and administrative skills; strong interpersonal and written/oral communication skills; high level of presentation, negotiation, consensus building, 
                problem solving, and conflict resolution skills. 
    C.	Ability to provide strong leadership, vision, and strategic direction, inspire and motivate staff, volunteers, interns, and donors; establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of  
                representatives of public and private organizations, members of boards, foundations, commissions and support groups, organization managers, museum staff, and the public.  
    D.	Ability to recruit, develop, and retain a highly qualified workforce to support museum mission and operations.  


Education:  A bachelor’s degree in museum studies, history, anthropology, public administration, historic preservation, archeology, art, art history or related field. 
                      Master’s degree preferred.
