Historic Richmond Town seeks a reliable and detail oriented person for the Collections Management & Care Intern position. This role will offer an educational and resume building opportunity in the field of collections management and care. The intern will gain hands-on experience dealing directly with material culture items spanning from the 17th to the 21st century. 

Historic Richmond Town was founded as the Staten Island Historical Society in 1856. The mission is to interpret and restore a living history village, operate a historical museum, and collect and preserve material culture to inspire engagement with and understanding of the diverse histories of Staten Island.

Historic Richmond Town includes not only the most complete living history village in NYC but also a nine gallery historical museum and arboretum, a working family farm and two other historic sites - including one of the oldest original houses in New York State. There is no other place like it in New York City. Over 90,000 people visit the site each year to enjoy tours, education programs, museum exhibits and special events. HRT’s Curatorial Department manages, cares for, and makes accessible a collection of more than 80,000 artifacts, photographs, and archival collections. Carli DeFillo, Collections Manager, and Colyn Hunt, Collections Care Officer, are seeking two interns to assist with a variety of projects.

Description
The Collections Management and Care Internship is an opportunity for a person to gain hands-on experience with historical collections in a museum setting. Working directly with the Collections team, the interns will:
Learn how to catalog and research artifacts, and relocate artifacts on exhibit and in storage.
Gain practical working knowledge of collections care best practices, including proper handling and cleaning methods for a wide range of objects, environmental monitoring, and creating condition reports.
Be trained on how to use the collections database system, PastPerfect 
Undertake training on how to prepare objects for photography and/or exhibition as needed.
Be given opportunities to attend organizational events, such as staff meetings, to gain a broader understanding of the workplace environment.

The internship schedule is flexible but must occur days between Monday and Friday. $500 stipend included. No room and board available. This internship requires in-person work, but may include occasional remote work. Due to the nature of the work, interns will experience regular exposure to dust and mold but PPE will be provided. 

Qualifications:
Must be currently enrolled in or have completed an undergraduate or graduate study (museum studies, public history, education, American history, collections management, anthropology or similar). Intern should be organized, mature, professional, and be able to work independently. An in-person interview is required.
