The point of the moving walkways in front of the Pieta were to keep the huge
number of viewers to the 64 Worlds Fair moving past the exhibit. It wasn't
because the viewers had a " seen it, been there' mentality (Sat nite Live had
not yet been invented)
It was because Michelangelo's Pieta was overseas for the first time and it
was being protected in anticipation of the clowns who would try to get their
name into the history books by doing something stupid and destructive, like
attacking the Pieta with a hammer.
