Dear Mr. Levin:
Three books I might recommend to start with are:
Burcaw, G. Ellis. "Introduction to Museum Work." 2nd ed., rev. & expanded.
(Nashville, TN: American Association for State and Local History, 1983)
[A little outdated, but still a manageable and sound introduction to the
field of museum work.]
Shapiro, Michael Steven, ed. "The Museum: A Reference Guide." (New York:
Greenwood Press, 1990)
[Although this one is a real investment at $60, it is a wonderful resource
guide with extensive bibliographies.]
Ambrose, Timothy and Crispin Paine. "Museum Basics." (New York: International
Council of Museums, 1993)
[A usable and highly detailed summary of museum operations -- the real nuts
and bolts stuff.]
I hope this gets you started.
With every good wish,
Steven
