Dear Friends; queridos amigos:
A)
I fully agree with Giovanni, regarding the discussions that have taken
place through ICOM-L regarding the definition of Museum.
Now, as I understand things, this discussion is by NO MEANS a final
proposal for a definite change in ICOM´s definition of museum. It was
meant to have an input from members but NOT as the final version to be
taken to the Advisory. As one of the Vice Presidents of the Executive, I
would certainly disagree to have a decision taken on such a small amount
of members´participation. Rich and serious as it is, ICOM-L is only a
fraction of ICOM´s membership. The definition of "museum" must come out
of a working group designated especially for that matter. The
definitions already received through ICOM L will, without doubt, be
essential for the group´s task.
Changing ICOM´s definition of museum is a very serious matter that has
to be carefully analyzed and evaluated by as many ICOM members as
possible.
I congratulate Gary and all those who have participated in the ICOM L
discussion. It has demonstrated its importance as a high level
discussion resource between members. I do hope more of this type of
communication between museum professionals will become permanent
practice.
B)
B)
I also agree wholeheartedly with Per Rekdal. His observations enrichen
ICOM and its ordinary, individual members.
How to envolve all of ICOM membership? Not only in the "museum
definition" issue but in all of ICOM´s vital policies, strategies and
programming schemes?
It is true that communication is a two side story. As the Americans say
"it takes two to tango" but I do beleive that a more proactive (and
provocative ?) communication system has te be implemented as in
relation to the ordinary ICOM member.
This scheme would reinforce, the present communications program since,
as we know, the Secretariat is understaffed and does too much already.

Subject: Museum Definition
The discussion on the definition of museum, started by
Gery Edson on september 18th, has seen the
partecipation of 50 among ICOM members: they have
sent around more than one hundred email messages.
The topic of discussion is extremely important and I
do not believe that a solution to this matter can be
found easily, as I do not believe that we can achieve
a new definition of museum through a discussion taking
place only via email and only in English.
Moreover all the members who have not subscribed ICOM
List have been excluded by the discussion, as well all
those members who have not access to the internet and
email, and all those members who are not fluent in
English.
I believe that, once the discussion via email has
ended, the Secreteriat (through its personnel or
perhaps throght stagiaires) should prepare a summary
of the discussion via email and should translate it
into the three official languages in order to
circulate it to all ICOM members via ordinary mail or via ICOM News. All
this should be accomplished so that the new definition of museum can be
adopted during the General Conferenc with wide approval.
I also believe that these procedures (summary,
translation and circulation or publication) should be adopted by the
Secretariat for all the email discussions consisting on a certain amount
of messages and concerning crucial topics for the life of the
organization (for ex. a possible discussion on the Statutes and on the
Code of Ethics).
