I have been following this thread since it is beginning, and I share
G.Pinna point of view on the needs of collecting opinion on such
important issue not only via e-mail, but to adopt a properly designed
page through Icom-news inviting members to communicate their point view.
Meanwhile I considered the French version of Gary Edson n°1 from the
most agreed definitions, I propose the following rewording:
"Les musées sont des institutions permanentes, à caractère non
commercial, vouées à disséminer le savoir, l'appréciation et la
préservation du monde naturel et de l'héritage culturel et scientifique
de l'humanité tant dans ces formes matérielles qu’intangibles. A partir
de collections, de souvenirs, de sites et des processus qui les
concenent, ils font des recherches qu'ils interprètent pour le bénéfice
public."
I will appreciate a translation from an English speaking colleague, to
see how this would sound.
