Dear Colleagues,
With great concern ICOM Europe is calling upon all parties involved in
military action in Georgia to respect the truce that has been
negotiated by the President of the European Council, Nicolas Sarkozy.
This includes the immediate withdrawal of Russian troops from Georgian
territory. In order to avoid further innocent victims among civilians
and the looting of cultural goods, marauders must be stopped by local
police authorities in joint action with international peace-keeping
troops. The National Committees in the region are encouraged to
cooperate closely in order to exchange information about possible
dislocation of collections, especially in border regions. We are most
thankful for the detailed information we have received from the Chair of
ICOM Georgia, Inga Karaia, and the Chair of the ICOM Desasster Relief
Task Force, Thomas Schuler. Our concern is connected with the hope that
any harm to museum personnel in the region can be avoided.
