Dear all,
There could be no human being without tears and sorrow, facing this
catastrophy. Of course, everyone is willing to help, with materials, advice
and work. I think that we will need, maybe, no later than the first week of
January, an evaluation of the disasters that affected the museums and the
cultural heritage, in different countries. Only after that preliminary
evaluation we will be able to tell what we could offer as help.
Coudl we find out who is going to send to ICOM this report? Are the national
committees, in the affected countries, able to make the report by
themselves, taking into account the enromity of the disaster?

Dear Allissandra Cummins,
ICMS and my colleagues in the Czech Republic have been following the
disaster in South Asia. I sent your letter to all ICMS members with an apeal
for any help. Further more, by my letter (on Tuesday) I have also asked all
the Czech state museums - some of them were affected by floods in 2002 - for
special attention and possible material help (devices which have remained
after floods or special machines which are recently not useful for them
anymore). With president of the ICOM Czech National Committee Ms Katka
Tlachova, I have also discussed the possible finacial help for museums.
However, there is not much money left at the end of this year, but we will
try to arrange something at the beginning of the comming year.
But of course, we need actual information on the status of affected museums
in the region.
I will keep you informed.
Thank you for all your hard work in 2004.
But believe in 2005.

Dear Colleague,
Thank you for your response. We have already received a number of messages,
some offering very practical advice on what might be done to effectively
support our colleagues in South Asia. Within ICOM we are now gathering this
information together with the slow trickles of information we are currently
getting about the status of the museums affected. As we gather this together
and work out plans , we will get back into contact with all of those
offering assistance.
Thank you for your attentive response.
