"Don't Let It Fall Apart: Tips for Furniture Care" A workshop presented
by the
Collection Managers Committee of the Texas Association of Museums
LOCATION: Dallas Museum of Art
DATE: Monday, July 23, 2001
TIME: 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
DEADLINE: Registration due by July 6, 2001
Almost all museums have furniture as part of their collection. Some
pieces are in good condition, some are not. Some pieces are worth the
expense to have them refurbished. When are they not? What about shell
inlays, upholstery, hardware? When to dust, when to polish? A piece is
in need of treatment, is it worth buying it for the collection? When is
bad condition, too bad to purchase a piece of furniture?
In this workshop, fine furniture conservator Alton Bowman will present
some of the basic care tips for the furniture in your collection. Be it
in storage or on display. Curator of Decorative Arts, Charles Venable,
will address issues dealing with purchase, display and treatment
decisions of furniture in the collection of the Dallas Museum of Art.
The workshop will end with a visit to Mr. Bowman's studio to review
various types of conservation and treatment for assorted pieces of
furniture you might find in your own collection.
