This depends on a number of factors. How do you want to store the material? Do y
ou need to build a
new storage facility or renovate one, or does one already exist that is up to st
andards?What is the
annual upkeep and maintenance cost of the storage facility? What are the relevan
t personnel costs
(curatorial staff salaries and benefits, etc.). Figure up your total fixed and c
ontinuing costs for
curation. The total cost would be the fixed costs plus enough to fund an endowme
nt, at a given rate of
return (3-3.5% is not unreasonable currently), to cover continuing costs. We're
at about $150/cubic foot
currently, but this is probably something of an underestimate of the real cost.
> 3) rehabilitate archives? by linear foot?
What do you mean by this? It really depends on the media, its condition, its pot
ential for use, etc.
You would do well to talk with a paper conservator about this project.

CD-ROM mastering machines start in the $5,000-10,000 range now. Call a service b
ureau about
mastering a single CD.
