Dallas County Conservation Board, Historic and Cultural Resources
Coordinator/ Museum Curator
Description: Under general supervision of the director,
develop, plan, and coordinate different elements of the historic and
cultural resource program for the Dallas County Conservation Board
(DCCB). Primary responsibilities include curate Forest Park Museum
and other facilities managed by DCCB, coordination of historic resources
in the county and region, interpretation providing information and
programs to organized groups, schools, and the public. This
position is flexible and diverse in responsibility and is available for
other DCCB operations, including ranger duties, maintenance, recreation
management, landscaping, and operation of equipment.
Demonstrated skill, knowledge, and success in museum management, exhibit
design, program development, natural resource management, and
interpretation is recommended.
Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree (B.A., B.S.) or Master's Degree
preferred from a four-year college or university in Museum Science,
History, Archaeology, or related natural science, design, or history
field, and four years progressive field experience.

SUMMARY
Manages, develops, and promotes the historical and cultural resources
program, curates museum facilities, coordinates related educational and
event based activities, and performs related work as required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other
duties may be assigned.
Assumes management and curation, under direction of the Executive
Director, of County Conservation facilities in several areas, including
but not limited to the following:

Implements a variety of promotional activities intended to educate the
public and stimulate interest in the use of Department parks.
Develops special events such as Heritage Day. Works with Extension
Services, organizations, and other programs through involvement with
facilities and events.
Enforces laws and regulations regarding the operation of county parks and
museum facilities.
Provides assistance to the public by answering inquiries, listening to
complaints, and interpreting park facilities, history, flora, and fauna.
Monitors recreational needs, evaluates existing facilities, and makes
recommendation to the director regarding improvements and operational
policies.
Gathers information for and compiles a variety of reports, data, and
recreational use estimates, for submission to the director.
Upon approval of and in coordination with the environmental education
coordinator and director, prepares and issues press releases,
newsletters, and information materials on Department activities.
Supervises concession operations on multiple use areas and insures
conformance with the terms of agreements.
Assists the director with hiring, training, scheduling, evaluating, and
supervising of seasonal or support employees.
Compiles and submits proposed budget to director for specific areas of
responsibility.
Promotes safety to park visitors and employees, and administers first
aide when needed.
Assists field staff as necessary in park maintenance work such as repair
of buildings, tools, equipment, and the maintenance of developed and
undeveloped grounds, roads, trails, restrooms, boundary fences, erosion
control, and water systems.
Participates in county organizations closely related to museum activities
such as Dallas County Historical Society, Genealogy Society, and
Certified Local Government (CLG).
Prepares management plans for museum facilities and operations.
Manages the operations of Forest Park Museum and Voas Geology and
Conservation Center, including day to day operations, maintenance,
special events, and inspection of maintenance activities.
Develop a landscape plan for Forest Park Museum. Provide an
effective well planned arboretum consisting of plant material determined
most effective as representatives of the historical, cultural, and
natural resources in Dallas County and the region.
Develop and maintain an effective quality exhibit and museum theme
program for Forest Park Museum and the Voas Geology and Conservation
Center. Exhibits will be effectively designed to allow interaction
and follow museum theme guidelines.
Develop an interactive viable volunteer and intern program to meet museum
program needs.
Provides a well coordinated program which opens participation to all
historic and cultural interests in Dallas County.
Develops and updates Forest Park Museum brochure and event publication.
Reports to the Director, all observed operation and maintenance needs in
all areas of the Conservation Department program.
This position in on call and regularly requires weekend, holiday, and
other overtime hours. Schedules will be approved by the Director.
Coordination and assistance to staff and programs will be assigned on
in-service and specialty committees within the Conservation Department in
areas including: archaeological resources, visitor assistance,
environmental education, and Greenbelt programs.
