Request for information on materials & technique of the Dutch 17th century painter Gerrit Dou and his circle. Currently the conservation department at The Royal Cabinet of Paintings Mauritshuis is making research into the materials & technique of Dutch 17th century still life and genre paintings. Of particular interest is the technique of the Leiden ‘fine-painters’, and specifically that of Gerrit Dou (1613-1675). It is known that Dou in some of his paintings used not only linseed oil but also walnut oil. ? Have you got analytical results relating to Dou’s binding medium? A number of Dou’s paintings show in IRR an underdrawing or a greyish undermodeling. ? Do you have complimentary information on this? Despite the underdrawing or undermodeling a number of pentimenti are observed in Dou’s paintings. ? Do you have additional information on this? We shall be grateful for any information on these issues, either in writing / figures / illustrations / photo’s … Yours sincerely Jørgen Wadum Chief Conservator Royal Cabinet of Paintings Mauritshuis P.O.
