It is a much smaller deal altogether with excellent manual and very easy to get started with. Once you are into project mode the files can be loaded into MS Project at a later date if you wish. Cost well under a $100 here in Australia I seem to recall.

I use an earlier version of Microsoft Project (Version 4.0) which used a
"new clock exhibit" at a "National Gallery" as their tutorial for learning
the program.
Microsoft Project is not cheap, but is useful. Ask around (e.g. in your
communuity's govenment to see if anyone is using it and see if you can try
it out. It might meet your needs. I use it for annual workplans of myself
and my staff.
Two tips:
1. Once you set up your plan, don't file and forget it. USE it and check
it - often.
2. The program is quite automated which can be handy, but can also drive you
to frustration at times. Watch for automatic date changes that you did not
request. PROOFREAD the printout BEFORE you circulate it, otherwise you might
find an event scheduled for a time you did not request, but which the
logical functions in the program shifted it to when you changed another
parameter.
There is a learning curve of course. One can use it quickly at a simple
level, but it also has many possible levels of complexity for those so
inclined. It is certainly a lot better than what was available a decade ago!
