Those flesh tone bandages (which I thought were called band-aids, but apparently, this is a generic name).... are to be used in an exhibition called Mapping the Mind and Body - a reasonably long-term exhibition for the new Melbourne Museum to be opened next year as the largest museum in the Southern Hemisphere. Some of you might remember me calling for various other materials, such as X-ray material last year. The exhibition traces the evolution of understanding about the human mind and body from Egyptian times to the present, using conceptual maps and exploring how these impact on society and the individual. We are discussing this through themes that include the external features, the devt. of anatomical understanding through surgery and dissection, medical imaging and microscopy. The bandages, which Erica Nash has generously offered to send me some examples of, are to be used in the first section - the external features. I wanted to show skin colours using both images and objects. I have foundation creams and I had the idea that different coloured bandages might be a good representation as well. Someone in the U.S. wrote back to me about skin coloured crayons..... If anyone has any brilliant ideas for representing the spectrum of skin colours using existing products, I'd love to hear from you. Thanks to all list members who responded to my call.
